Kawhi Leonard just won his second NBA title in his career with the Toronto Raptors this past season. He was the Finals MVP and Leonard was traded from the San Antonio Spurs the offseason before.
He also won Finals MVP with San Antonio in 2014. Kawhi Leonard is a free agent this offseason and it will be interesting to see where he signs. The free agency period begins on Sunday June 30 starting at 6:00 p.m. eastern.
A lot of people think he will stay with the Toronto Raptors, but it is also possible that he could head back home and play in the Los Angeles area. The most likely team he would play for is the Los Angeles Clippers because they have cap space to sign a max player or two.
There have been reports on Friday morning that Kawhi Leonard might seriously be playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, but I would find it hard to believe that he wants to play along side with Lebron James and Anthony Davis.
How would Leonard look if he decided to join Lebron James and Anthony Davis with the Lakers? I think it wouldn’t be a very good look, but I think it would be more of a bad look on Lebron James.
The reason why I say this is because it kind of feels like Lebron is trying to stack his teams once again like he did with the Miami Heat. Also Lebron has not won an NBA Title in three years and it feels like he has to win more rings in order to catch Michael Jordan’s six rings by teaming up with All-Stars.
Also, if Kawhi Leonard does not go to the Lakers, I think he is going to go back to the Toronto Raptors, but the Los Angeles Clippers is also a very good possibility as well.
The other potential players that the Los Angeles Lakers could sign after making a trade with the Washington Wizards on Thursday afternoon to clear up space is either Jimmy Butler, D’Angelo Russell, Klay Thompson, Kyrie Irving, or Kemba Walker.
Los Angeles will also needs to sign other key veterans and role players on the roster in order to shape this all out. Leonard going to the Lakers next season would be unfair and it would be the same thing when Kevin Durant went to the Golden State Warriors but the difference is that Kawhi Leonard wouldn’t be ring chasing.
He would be going back home to Los Angeles and Leonard has not ringed chased in his career. It would be interesting if Russell went back to the Los Angeles Lakers because that is where he started his career and D’Angelo Russell was traded to the Brooklyn Nets back in the summer of 2017 and Russell started to become an All-Star.
This is going to be an interesting next few days in the NBA.
In 60 games last season with the Toronto Raptors, Kawhi Leonard averaged 26.6 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 3.3 APG, 0.4 BPG, and 1.8 SPG. He is also the best two-way player in the NBA right now as well.
