The New York Giants will have two first-round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft. Those are the 6th & 17th overall picks, they will have an additional 10 picks through the remaining 6 rounds, giving them 12 overall.. The 17th pick was acquired from the Cleveland Browns in the Odell Beckham Jr. trade last week. Odell Beckham Jr. knows that he was low balled by this franchise. He was one of the reasons why fans wanted to come to the games. He was also one of the reasons why Eli Manning is still employed in the NFL.
It seems pretty obvious what the Giants should do with the sixth overall pick, they need to draft quarterback Dwayne Haskins from Ohio State. However, the devotion that the Giants ownership has to Eli Manning may cause them not to draft Haskins or any other available quarterback with the sixth overall pick.
Fans are already sick of the love affair between the Giants ownership and Manning, they think that is what’s holding the franchise back.
General Manager David Gettleman truly believes building a strong offensive line will make Eli look good in 2019. What Gettleman either seems to forget or refuses to admit is that Manning can’t throw passes down the field effectively anymore. This lack of arm strength will give teams the opportunity to stack eight or nine in the box on Saquon Barkley.
Back to the draft picks, there will be a ton of directions that the Giants could go in with the 17th pick. They need a pass rusher, a cornerback, and help on the offensive line. The best case scenario would be to draft one of these three players if they are still available: offensive lineman Andre Dillard from Washington State, offensive lineman Cody Ford from Oklahoma, or edge rusher Clelin Ferrell from Clemson.
The Giants will also need to find a free agent wide receiver or they might draft one in using their 17th overall pick instead of drafting one of the players mentioned above, but they could find some value at that position in the second-round too.
General manager David Gettleman better have a plan up his sleeve because Giants fans have no idea what he is doing right now. Fans want to get a sense for what Gettleman is thinking but they can’t seem to figure out what his plan is and that’s making them really frustrated. It will be interesting to see what direction this franchise heads in. If most of these picks aren’t don’t pay off immediately, it is quite possible David Gettleman is out of a job after this season. As of right now, he has made things even worse for this franchise than former general manager Jerry Reese did.
