This past Friday, it seemed as if the Buffalo Bills were going to acquire wide receiver Antonio Brown from the Pittsburgh Steelers. That would have been huge for Buffalo because they don’t have a true play maker on the outside. Saturday morning, the trade was nixed by him. The Bills will still look to find quarterback Josh Allen a play maker or two on the outside in order for him to succeed.
Allen was selected seventh overall in the 2018 NFL Draft and Buffalo traded up to get him. He is one of the most athletic quarterbacks in the NFL. I have told people that when Allen gets a legitimate number one wide receiver, he is going to take off.
Allen completed 52.8 percent of his passes last season for 2,074 yards 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 631 yards on 89 carries and eight touchdowns. Those flashes of potential he showed last season were a big reason why the Bills won 6 games in 2018. Originally, the Bills had no intention to play him, but they had no choice after their Week 1 quarterback, Nathan Peterman, played extremely badly.
The Bills best wide receiver is Zay Jones. He caught 56 passes for 652 yards receiving and 7 touchdowns last season. Jones was the only receiver on the team that had more than 27 receptions. He is obviously good enough to be on the roster, but upgrading at that position is really important.
Buffalo will have the ninth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. D.K. Metcalf and A.J. Brown from Ole Miss, N’Keal Harry from Arizona State, and Marquise Brown from Oklahoma will be some of the wide receivers available with the number nine pick.
Demaryius Thomas, Golden Tate, and Michael Crabtree are some of the top wide receivers available on the free agent market. Tate is more of a slot receiver than an outside receiver. Thomas and Crabtree are both very good on the outside.
The Bills biggest plan this off season is to upgrade the offensive side of the ball. They were one of the worst teams offensively last season. If Buffalo can improve in that area, they will be fine heading into next season.
