The NBA is filled with lots of talent and for a time centers in the NBA we’re irrelevant for some years. Now the NBA has some seriously skilled big men that are making a difference in the league while leading their teams. When it comes to Nikola Jokic he should be considered in the top 10 of NBA players he doesn’t get talked about enough when he’s actually leading the pack as the elite of the young big men. A lot of people are high on Joel Embiid and thinks of him as MVP type of candidate. However, I’m here to say that I’d rather have Nikola Jokic on my team instead of Embiid. On the surface people can say that Embiid is the better player he’s averaging 26.9 points 13.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. While on the other hand Jokic is averaging 18.8 points 10 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game. From those stats alone fans could say that Embiid is better because he’s averaging more points and rebounds per game than Jokic. However, Embiid shoots about four more shots per game than Jokic. Embiid also has a higher usage rate than Jokic as well at 32% compared to Jokic’s 26.7%. Meaning Embiid’s only scoring more because he must shoot at a high volume to be effective on the court.
Jokic doesn’t need to shoot at a high volume to be affective on the court. His playmaking ability makes up for his not often volume scoring with 7.5 assists per game. Jokic is also top 10 in the NBA in assists and rebounds. A center being top 10 in assists is a big deal in the dawn of the new age point guard. Jokic is one of the most efficient offensive big men in the game. Nikola is the best playmaker and scorer out the post in today’s NBA that should count for something in today’s three-point shooting NBA.
Oh, Jokic can also stroke it from three. He’s a career 35% shooter from deep this allows the Nuggets to spread floor better than most teams in the NBA. This also helps Jokic be a more valuable option in the clutch as well, he’s already hit a few game winners this year. Jokic has a better win share percentage and box plus/minus than most players in the NBA as well. On the defensive end he has as many defensive win shares (which measures the teams wins due to the player’s defense) as Embiid. Combine that with Jokic having a better defensive plus/minus I would say The Joker is holding his weight on that end as well.
Jokic overall play has been indicative of his team’s success, nobody had the Denver Nuggets winning these many games in west at this point. The Nuggets have been dealing with key injuries to Paul Millsap, Garry Harris, Will Barton, and others but the Nuggets kept winning. Speaking of injuries Jokic is also more durable than most players as well as well with 73 games being the least, he’s played in his four seasons. Jokic needs be taken seriously as an MVP contender and it’s time to start talking about him being in the top 10 players of the NBA.
